The Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light (MPL) conducts research that
covers a wide range of topics, including nonlinear optics, quantum optics,
nanophotonics, photonic crystal fibres, optomechanics, quantum technologies,
biophysics, and links between physics and medicine. The Max Planck Institute
for the Science of Light currently employs around 300 people from a wide

We invite applications for a position in a new three-year research project
funded by the German Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR)
through the funding scheme “Wissenschaftliche Vorprojekte zu Grundlagenfragen
der Quantentechnologien und Photonik.”
We are seeking a
Research Engineer or Postdoctoral Researcher (m/f/d) in the field of
Engineering Physics or Materials Science (or a related qualification) for
research and development into specialty optical fibres
Your tasks
- 3D-printing, extrusion, and chemical purification of structured glass
preforms made from fused silica
- Drawing of microstructured optical fibres, in particular novel hollow-core
fibres for applications in high-speed commu-nications, quantum technology,
sensor technology, etc.
- Publication of the achieved results in scientific journals and at
conferences
Your profile
- Experience with working in a cleanroom environment is an advantage, as is
experience in fibre optics, handling of pro-cess gases, glass processing, and
control engineering
- A completed Master’s degree or PhD in Engineering Physics, Materials
Science, Engineering or a similar discipline
- The ability to work independently, a willingness to learn, and a team spirit
- Good English skills
- The ability to climb stairs in a cleanroom is an essential requirement

The position is part of a three-year research project. Remuneration is based
on your qualifications and experience, in accordance with the pay scale set out
in the collective agreement for the public sector (TVöD Bund). You can expect
