Introduction The Leibniz Institute of Virology (LIV) is an independent research institution for basic biomedical research. As a foundation under civil law and member of the Leibniz Association, the Institute occupies a leading position both nationally and internationally. The Research Department Viral Zoonoses - One Health, headed by Prof. Dr. Gülşah Gabriel, investigates the interspecies transmission of influenza A viruses from animals to humans and the molecular mechanisms of pathogenesis in humans, particularly with regard to risk factors (pregnancy, obesity, and gender dependence). The department aims to identify and characterize viral and cellular determinants driving increased pathogenicity and transmissibility. These insights are further extended to other respiratory viruses, including SARS-CoV-2 and RSV, with particular attention to post-acute sequelae and their long-term impact. Ultimately, the knowledge gained will inform the development of novel antiviral strategies. We are looking for a highly motivated, ambitious, and team-oriented candidate for a Postdoc position (f/m/x) Conduct and shape a research project on the pathogenesis of respiratory virus infections under BSL-2 and BSL-3 conditions Work as an independent researcher with accountability towards the research project Preparation and submission of animal experimentation applications in compliance with regulatory requirements, including direct liaison with the relevant authorities to ensure timely approval Integrate into the research team and provide support for junior members / students Present research findings at national and international level Develop future research projects and draft manuscriptsa Solid expertise in virology or cell biology and experimental laboratory work Experience in conducting animal experiments Strong commitment, team spirit, very good communication and organizational skills, and ability to work in an independent and flexible manner PhD degree in life sciences Very good German and English language skills (oral and written) Working as part of a highly motivated team in a state-of-the-art, international research environment with excellent core facilities Remuneration according to EG 00 TV-AVH (Hamburg Employment Law Association Collective Agreement) (comparable to TVöD - Civil Service Collective Agreement), including company pension scheme 30 days of annual vacation Opportunity to obtain FELASA C certification, providing the qualification to independently conduct animal experimentation Further training opportunities, incl. subsidized English and German courses at the Institute Grant for unscheduled child care Health protection offers at the Institute (in cooperation with voiio GmbH) Flexible, family-friendly working hours HVV Deutschlandticket subsidy Canteen use subsidy The position is initially limited for two years with starting date October 1st, 2026.
